Medication Overuse Headache

Do you have a constant daily headache, and the Tylenol or Advil just isn’t working anymore? Did you know that not only are the pain medications not helping anymore, but they may actually be the cause for your daily headache?

“Medication overuse headache” is one of the most common reasons for patients with migraines to develop more frequent headaches. Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, opiates, and even the triptan family of medications can all cause medication overuse headache. The maximum recommended frequency of use is 10 days/month for triptans and 15 days/month for Tylenol and NSAIDs. Opiates should almost never be used for migraine, as they increase the risk of developing chronic migraine (headaches > 15 days/month).

The key to solving this problem is to not only stop using these medications so frequently, but also to start an effective migraine prevention regimen. There are many preventative options, but I always start by recommending natural supplements to my patients, and I’ve combined all the evidence-based natural supplements into one convenient capsule called MigraineMD.
